Pocket test measures fifty things in a drop of blood

Dec. 19, 2012 ? A new device about the size of a business card could allow health care providers to test for insulin and other blood proteins, cholesterol, and even signs of viral or bacterial infection all at the same time -- with one drop of blood. Preliminary tests of the V-chip, created by scientists at The Methodist Hospital Research Institute and MD Anderson Cancer Center, were just published by Nature Communications.

"The V-Chip could make it possible to bring tests to the bedside, remote areas, and other types of point-of-care needs," said Nanomedicine faculty member Lidong Qin, Ph.D., the project's principal investigator. "V-Chip is accurate, cheap, and portable. It requires only a drop of a sample, not a vial of blood, and can do 50 different tests in one go."

Similar assays are typically done using heavy, large, complex equipment such as mass spectrometers, or require fluoroscopy analysis, which must also be done in a lab.

The V-chip, short for "volumetric bar-chart chip," on the other hand, can be carried around in a pocket. It is composed of two thin pieces of glass, about 3 in. by 2 in. In between are wells for four things: (1) hydrogen peroxide, (2) up to 50 different antibodies to specific proteins, DNA or RNA fragments, or lipids of interest, and the enzyme catalase, (3) serum or other sample, and (4) a dye -- any dye will do. Initially, the wells are kept separate from each other. A shift in the glass plates brings the wells into contact, creating a contiguous, zig-zagged space from one end of the V-chip to the other.

As the substance of interest -- say, insulin -- binds to antibodies bound to the glass slide, catalase is made active and splits nearby hydrogen peroxide into water and oxygen gas. This approach is called ELISA, or enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The oxygen pushes the dye up the column. The more present insulin is, the more oxygen is created, and the farther dye is pushed up the slide. Tests show that distance is more or less proportional to the amount of substrate present, in this example, insulin. The end result is a visual bar chart. Easy to read and accurate, Qin says, though development continues.

"The sensitivity of the V-chip can be improved if narrower and longer bar channels are used," Qin said. "Our next steps are to make the device more user friendly and be so simple to use, it barely needs instructions."

Qin is also a Weill Cornell Medical College assistant professor of cell and developmental biology.

Today's Google Play deal honors Keith Richards

Yesterday, Google kicked off its holiday deals, and has promised a new surprise deal every day until New Years. The interesting thing is that it seems the Google Play page will list the old deals each day, but the deal isn't actually there. So, you can still see the download link for Hotel Tonight, but the deal is no longer active. Better to just focus on the new deal from the Google Play Store which honors Keith Richards.

Keith Richards, for those who don't know, is a founding member and guitarist for the Rolling Stones, and today is his birthday. Today, Keith is 69 years old, and it is widely regarded as a miracle that he has lived this long, given the rock and roll lifestyle that he has enjoyed for the past 50 years as part of the Rolling Stones.

To honor his birthday, Google Play is giving away?a free live version of "Beast of Burden" from the final show of the Rolling Stones' 1982 tour. It's unclear if it's part of the deal, but you can also purchase the entire album for just $4.99, which is an amazing deal given that the live album is 25 tracks.?

Finance News: What Wealth Building Really Means - Investment ...

A man was heard to say, "After my first divorce, I swore that I would never destroy all of my efforts to build wealth again. But my second and third wives had their own plans!"

We all know the story of the 3 Little Pigs. The first pig was in a hurry and built his house of the first thing he could find, which was straw, and the wolf of happenstance quickly blew that down! The second pig figured he was a little smarter, but did not want to spend the money so he built his house of sticks. But the wolf of misfortune quickly blew his house down too! The third pig had a Plan. He was a Smart Little Pig. He understood the Compounded Power of Synergy in a relationship and he loved and respected his wife. So he consulted with his wife and family and they thought carefully about what they wanted, both for now and in the future.

They wanted a house that would last, was secure and would build in value. They made their house of brick and the wolf of fate could Not blow this house down! The part of the story that is not often told is that the third pig did more than build his house of brick. Long before he ordered the brick and hired the brick layers, he and his wife hired a soil engineer to find ground that was solid.

He consulted with the zoning and planning people in his area to ensure that there were no freeways or other commercial development that would impact the quiet beauty and value of his home. Then he consulted an architect that was very good at building quality homes that would last, were practical, functional and would grow in value.

You see, the third pig and his wife took the time to do their homework which is also called Due Diligence. They decided that building a quality house was not just good for their family home, but it also fit into their Wealth Building Plan so that all their piglets would benefit too. They built upon a Solid Foundation, both in terms of structure and planning.

Due Diligence versus Lottery Logic

How many emails do you get a day that have buzz words with an appeal to get rich quick, effortlessly? How many television, magazine, mail or newspaper advertisements do you see a day that contain words such as easy, no money down or get wealthy while you sleep? Your brain, at an intellectual level, knows these types of offers frequently do Not deliver what they claim. You also know from personal experience that things are rarely as easy as advertised.

Inside of you, you know this. Yet it can be enticing to take a chance. This is what I call Lottery Logic. Too easily, many of us are swayed by the argument that Somebody will win the lottery. Yes, this is true, someone will. However, this form of logic tends to overlook facts such as your odds of winning are about 1 in 10,000,000 or greater.

You cannot Build Wealth using Lottery Logic.

In the last two years our economy has suffered from high unemployment, lending and investment failures, declines in retirement funds, budget deficits and much more. First real estate and then the stock market as investments collapsed. So is now a good time to invest in stocks, real estate or some other investment? It could be.

However this is not the right question. The question you should ask yourself is: Is now a good time for You to invest in stocks, real estate or something else? To effectively answer This question, you must have a clear understanding of what you and your family needs and wants now and in the future.

A clear understanding requires that you acknowledge your actual level of expertise in making these kinds of investments and make no assumptions. If you don't have the right experience or knowledge, find viable resources that you can understand and trust.

It is especially important to have a clear picture of your long term goals. Long term goals influence short term goals. Therefor you need a Plan that includes the following:

1. Financial and personal goals 2. The steps to getting there 3. Criteria for how you will work together (Love factors) and criteria for investing and using money (Money Factors) 4. Criteria and steps for educating yourself and finding resources that will help you to do your due diligence before making decisions 5. An Action Plan

Obtaining good information combined with a solid plan, are the foundation for effective Wealth Building.

London is named the host city for the 2017 Paralympic World Championships - @BBCSport

London has won the right to host the 2017 Paralympic Athletics World Championships.

The Championships will be held at the Olympic Stadium just one month before the World Athletics Championships.

It is the first time a city has hosted the two championships in the same year.

"London's Paralympic Games were the first ever to sell out, and these Championships provide a perfect chance to build on that enthusiasm," Mayor Boris Johnson said.

"By bringing the IPC Athletics World Championships to our wonderful Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park just a month before the World Athletics Championships, the capital is poised to recreate the magic of 2012."

This summer's Paralympic Games was hailed as the "best Games" in history by the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) president Sir Philip Craven.

A total 1,134 athletes took part in track and field events in London, setting 102 world and 139 Paralympic records.

Every session of the athletics competition at the Paralympics drew sold-out crowds of 80,000.

  • The series is a National Lottery-funded campaign that aims to bring more than 70 of the world's top sporting events to the UK
  • Campaign organisers hope those events will attract 2.5 million spectators in the UK to watch world-class sport
  • Events will be held at eight London 2012 venues, plus other locations across the country
  • Those other locations include five venues being used for the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow

"We want to build on the huge success of the London 2012 Paralympics so I am delighted that the International Paralympic Committee has awarded London the honour of hosting its 2017 Athletics World Championships," said Minister for Sport Hugh Robertson.

"This is the latest in a long line of top class sporting events that will be staged in the UK over the next few years. Hosted in the iconic Olympic Stadium, I know it will receive huge support from the British public."

UK Sport previously announced a campaign to create an Olympic legacy by bringing 36 World and European championships to the United Kingdom.

The Gold Event Series will use ?27m of lottery money over the next six years and aims to bring a total of more than 70 sporting events to the UK.

Among the events being targeted are the semi-finals and final of football's European Championship in 2020 and the Hockey World Cup.

Bids are also in place for the 2016 Track Cycling World Championships and European Swimming Championships.

The Diving World Series, the World Triathlon Series, the World Figure Skating Championships and the Track Cycling World Cup are also being targeted as part of the campaign, which has been launched as a partnership between UK Sport and the Department for Culture, Media and Sport.

Scientists Look For New Drugs In Skin Of Russian Frog

For centuries, Russians believed putting a brown frog in their milk would keep it fresh. Now scientists are finding chemicals in the frog's slimy goo that inhibit the growth of bacteria and fungi.

Stefan Arendt/Corbis

For centuries, Russians believed putting a brown frog in their milk would keep it fresh. Now scientists are finding chemicals in the frog's slimy goo that inhibit the growth of bacteria and fungi.

Stefan Arendt/Corbis

Before the advent of refrigeration, Russians had a neat trick for keeping their milk from spoiling. They'd drop a live frog in the milk bucket.

The Russians weren't sure how this amphibian dairy treatment worked, but they were convinced it did.

Since then, researchers have discovered that the goo some frogs secrete through their skin has antibacterial and antifungal properties.

One group of scientists led by a Russian chemist is trying to break down this frog goo at a molecular level. The researchers have found compounds they hope will lead to new medicines.

"Their activity is really enormous," says Albert Lebedev, a scientist at Moscow State University, describing the chemicals they've found in the goo.

Frogs have neither teeth nor claws, so the secretions from their skin constitute one of their main defenses against predators large and microscopic, Lebedev tells Shots.

To extract the secretions, Lebedev's team applied electrodes to the skin glands of Russian brown frogs. "It's not harmful," Lebedev says. "A little bit painful for her, but not harmful."

They analyzed the resulting milky frog goo and found a complex cocktail containing chunks of proteins called peptides.

Lebedev's team identified 76 different types of peptides that showed a variety of different properties that could be useful to medical science.

Now that scientists have identified some of the compounds present on the skin of Russian frogs, one of the next steps is to figure out how to create them synthetically. Lebedev says he's spoken with several pharmaceutical companies, including Pfizer, about doing this but his talks haven't led to any firm plans.

Natural substances do sometimes form the basis for synthetic pharmaceuticals, as our very own Adam Cole told us earlier today. But the process is a long and perilous one that leads to disappointment more often that it leads to a new drug, says Jun O. Liu, a professor of pharmacology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.

"There are natural substances that work in a lab beautifully but then when you give it to a human it's totally inactive or it's toxic," Liu says.

It's certainly possible that new classes of antibiotics or other drugs could be derived from chemicals in frogs' skin. But, Liu says, if that happens, it will be a long, long time before those drugs wind up in the pharmacy.

To read more about what Lebedev and his team found in frogs, check out their paper in the latest issue of the Journal of Proteome Research.
