Police: Cowboys' Brent had 0.189 BAC after crash

DALLAS (AP) ? Dallas Cowboys nose tackle Josh Brent was driving with a suspended license and had a blood-alcohol content more than twice the legal limit at the time of the car crash that killed teammate and friend Jerry Brown, according to documents released by police Thursday.

The 24-year-old Brent was tested after the crash in the early hours of Dec. 8 at 0.189 percent, well above the Texas limit of 0.08. One police report said Brent was intoxicated, driving over the speed limit and swerving out of one lane when he struck a curb in Irving, a suburb of Dallas, causing the car to flip over.

The crash report also says Brent was driving with an expired and suspended driver's license obtained in Illinois, where he pleaded guilty three years ago to driving under the influence, a misdemeanor.

Brown was pronounced dead at a Dallas hospital. Brent was arrested and indicted Wednesday on one count of intoxication manslaughter. He faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted, though he could also receive probation. Brent is free on $100,000 bond and required to wear an alcohol monitor. His attorney, George Milner, did not return a phone message left Thursday morning.

Authorities say they also found an unopened bottle of Cognac liquor in searching Brent's Mercedes sedan, along with "multiple receipts" and his iPad and cellphone. Brent and Brown reportedly spent at least part of Friday night at the club Privae Dallas. The iPad and cellphone found in the Mercedes have information "from the events prior to and during the crash that will aid this investigation," other warrants said.

The 25-year-old Brown was on the Cowboys practice squad and played with Brent at the University of Illinois. The two men have been described as close friends. Brent has been placed on the NFL reserve/non-football illness list and won't play again this season.

No court dates in his case have been scheduled.

Heath Harris, the first assistant Dallas County district attorney, said prosecutors hoped to turn over evidence to Milner as soon as possible. He said he wanted to have the case tried "as quickly as possible."

"It has the potential to send a strong message about how we feel about our intoxication laws," Harris said.

High blood pressure, the pressure in the vessels is increased. This increases the risk for stroke, vascular disease and other serious heart condition

Classic blood pressure: pressure cuff on the upper arm, listening to the sound when you release the pressure (Sphygmanometrie and auscultation)

Survey

Normal blood pressure is below 140/90 mmHg. High blood pressure (or hypertension also called arterial hypertension), these measurements are repeated or consistently exceeded.

High blood pressure occurs mainly as primary hypertension, ie high blood pressure ?in itself.? This means that it is not caused by other diseases. Only about ten to fifteen percent of people with specific diseases, such as kidney, adrenal or thyroid glands are the cause (secondary hypertension). With the treatment of these diseases is often regulated, the increased blood pressure.

However, the problem is that high blood pressure often initially makes no complaints. He usually remains undetected once. The health consequences are long term, however severe. Constantly high pressure strain on the heart. It also constricts the blood vessels, accelerating atherosclerosis (arteriosclerosis) and deteriorated to the circulation.

Therefore, high blood pressure is a leading risk factor for stroke and the next Diabetes (diabetes mellitus) and dyslipidemia a major cause of heart disease such as heart attack and heart failure. The risk of disability and death is high blood pressure increased significantly with these complications.

Also, kidney and eye disease are often based on high blood pressure. As a result, it can lead to kidney failure, and vision impairment, worst come to blindness.

An Unpublished Writer's Wall of Fame ? Marmaduke Writing Factory

When I was a teenager, back in the 1970s, I had a big poster of the Marx Brothers above my bed (the brothers? eyes would follow you around the room, which was creepy enough that late one night I tore the poster down); quotes from favorite movies (Casablanca, M, The Maltese Falcon, more Marx Brothers) around my bookshelf; and curling old 8x10s of the New York Mets near the door.

Oh, and a wall full of rejection slips over my desk.

I was about eight when I decided I wanted to be a writer, and maybe fourteen when I took that desire public, so to speak, by submitting my work to magazines, newspapers, and even more far-flung destinations. My benchmark, my guide, my Bible: Writer?s Market, a huge tome that listed every possible outlet for my prose. There came a time when I knew the name of the articles editors of everything from The New Yorker to the Old Farmer?s Almanac.

As the results dribbled in?self-addressed stamped envelopes dropping through our mail slot?out would come the Scotch tape and up would go the rejection slip. A form letter, every time, always using roughly the same words: We are sorry to inform you?. Does not suit our present needs?. Best of luck in the future?.?One magazine, possibly? The Atlantic,?said, Please excuse this impersonal form of reply, which I thought sounded especially?personal.

Why was I so proud of my rejection slips? Why I would show them off, instead of burying them in a drawer or tossing them into the trash? Maybe it was because the letters themselves,?with their famous titles at the top, made me feel like I was a real writer. (Someone in those hallowed editorial offices had read my writing, or at least a few sentences of it!)?Or maybe I was just hardening myself to the realities of the writing life, getting ready for a career necessarily filled more with disappointment than glory.

I don?t know.

I never received the rejection slip reproduced above. (It was sent by a film company to a prospective screenwriter in 1920, and I found it online.) But here?s one thing I do know: If I had, I wouldn?t have been crushed. The letter would immediately have gotten pride of place on my Wall of Fame.

And then, unbowed, I would have sat down at my clattery Olympia typewriter and tried again.

Home Improvement Secrets You May Not Know About | Career Guru ...

When you are faced with lots of trees that can clutter your gutters, install a screen over the gutters to slow build-up. A gutter guard keeps leaves, sticks and other debris from filling your gutters needlessly. You will only need to check the top of the guard from time to time to make sure that the guard is not covered with any leaves.

With regards to home improvement, understand how long certain things last. For example, a new stone or brick chimney can provide 100 years or more of use. On the other hand, you may get less than 20 years' use out of a new wooden deck. A vinyl floor can last between 20 and 30 years, which seems like a long time until you consider the fact that oak flooring can easily last a century. This should be greatly considered when deciding which home renovations are worth the time and money spent on them.

Establish a budget and stick to it. Budgets are created to adhere to. Make a budget that makes sense and stick with it the whole way through.

Budgeting for your home improvements should be done in the beginning of the year. This is because after the holidays you will have a better assessment of your spending. Having little to work with may help you create a very frugal budget, indeed!

You can save on your energy bills by undertaking some simple and fast home improvement projects. Just by installing more energy efficient light bulbs, you can use a lot less energy - almost 75 percent less. Heat, energy and money can be conserved by insulating your water heater.

Give your porch an "up" as well. This is where you make your initial impression to your guests. Keep your porch clean and add tasteful enhancements. Flowers, nice furniture and great lighting can be used to dress up an otherwise boring and bland porch. This is a great way to increase the value of your home.

Ask family and friends for help with your home improvement project. If you wait to ask for help when you have already begun the project, it might be to late for people to commit. It may also take you longer to finish your project than you initially expected.

If your renovations will require using your street then you should take the time to let the neighbors know what will be going on. Certain big projects may require use of the street, maybe for bringing in equipment. Your neighbors deserve some warning before you start the work and inconvenience them.

If you have a low water pressure, you should be able to fix this problem easily. Start by consulting with your neighbors and see if they're experiencing the same problem. If they aren't, then the problem resides in your home. Try all of the taps in your home; you want to know if the problem is affecting your whole house or just some faucets. You may find the problem simply attributed to an aerator in need of adjustment, or else wise, a call to a professional may be in order.

Now that you have gathered the knowledge that is needed to complete home projects, gather the tools that you need to get going. If you find that you are stuck at some point of your project, take the time to re-read the information from this article to see if you can find the solution to the problem.

How To Structure An Online Joint Venture For ... - Name.com

HOW TO STRUCTURE AN ONLINE JOINT VENTURE FOR MAXIMUM BENEFIT

When you are getting started online, one of the first things that you need to build is a customer base. ?Of course, that is difficult to do if you are new and no one knows about you or your products. ?To overcome this you will have to grow your following using SEO, PR and social media.

However, one thing that you can do to jump start the building of your customer base is to leverage the following of someone who has already established themselves in the niche you are entering. ?Many online marketers have participated in?a joint venture?with a marketer who has already developed his?own customer base and seen impressive results.

In a joint venture you are working with another marketer to create and deliver a new product for the marketplace. ?This works well for new marketers when they have an innovative product or service to sell to the niche, but do not necessarily have a solid customer base. Therefore the established marketer is lending her?name, market power and customer database to the project.

When you are looking for potential joint venture partners, a prudent way to make your case to them?is to purchase their product (if possible). ?This will typically give you contact information that the established marketer doesn?t share with non business partners. ?Another factor to keep in mind is that these individuals will have likely received joint venture requests before yours. ?Most of the requests they receive will be hastily crafted emails, which the marketer will find easy to turn down. ?Your approach should be different (consider sending a letter instead of an email) and professional, so that it stands out from the rest.

To create a well run joint venture, the parties typically set up a formal agreement?of some kind once they have decided on the various responsibilities they need to take to bring their product to market. ?When you are first starting, it is typical to accept less than 50% of the profits, as well as doing more than 50% of the work. ?The joint venture benefits you a great deal because not only will you be gaining new customers, but you will also be building your customer database.

Logitech UE 9000

Logitech's new line of UE headphones includes the powerful, comfortable, and wireless UE 9000. At $399.99 (direct), it's one of the pricier Bluetooth options we've tested, but it doesn't disappoint from a performance standpoint, offering distortion-free audio with deep bass response. It can also be used as a wired pair?a cable is included?and has a built-in remote for controlling iOS devices and handling phone calls. There aren't too many downsides to the UE 9000 other than its price?$400 is significantly more than some of the most comparable competition, like the Beats by Dr. Dre Wireless.

Design
The latest UE designs from Logitech all have a common thread?the color blue that graces the audio cable and the inside of the earcups, and generally futuristic styling, with glossy black-and-metallic color schemes and angular, jagged contours. The UE 9000 features all these things, as well as an exceedingly comfortable circumaural (over-the-ear) fit. Plush earcups are accompanied by a slightly-less plush underside of the headband, but overall the fit is comfortable and ideal for long listening sessions.

There's a Listen Through button on the left earcup?press it to mute music and hear the outside world. The right earcup houses Volume, Playback/Navigation, and Phone controls, as well as the Power Switch, which at least on our model, feels a little poorly designed?loosely fitting in its slide compartment. The Volume controls work independently of the controls on the sound source itself.Logitech UE 9000 inline

Although it is wireless, the UE 9000 can also be used as a wired pair?the 3.5mm cable also connects to the right earcup, along with the USB recharging cable. This would be a big plus even if you had to use the rechargeable headphones in active, powered-up mode in order use the cable, simply because not all sources you can connect cables to will support Bluetooth streaming. But Logitech took the convenience factor one step further here?you can use the UE 9000 as a wired pair with the power off, in passive mode, thus saving battery life. The overall power of the drivers drops off noticeably, but the UE 9000 can get so loud, this is hardly hindrance to enjoying them.

The included detachable cable has an inline microphone and remote for controlling Apple iOS devices and making phone calls. Call clarity is pretty par for the course?you'll be able to hear your call partners and they'll understand you just fine, but since we're dealing with cellular audio fidelity, don't expect to hear a pin drop.

Also included: a USB charging cable that detaches from a wall outlet charger (so you can charge direct from the power adapter or from your computer's USB port), a cleaning shammy cloth, and sturdy zip-up case that the headphones fold down flat into.

The pairing process with a typical mobile device, like the iPhone 4S, is simple and quick, and the headphones use a clever, cool-sounding audio alert, rather than blinking LEDs, to let you know the status of your connection.

Logitech doesn't specify what Bluetooth codecs and versions the UE 9000 supports, but it will work with any iPad, every iPhone since the 3GS, and most iPods that are still made. Battery life will vary with usage, but Logitech estimates a full charge will last roughly 10 hours for wireless listening, 20 hours for powered listening through the audio cable.

Performance
On deep bass tracks at top volumes?on both the source device (in this case, an iPhone 4S) and the headphones, the UE 9000 did not distort. Even at maximum volume, the Knife's "Silent Shout" and Thom Yorke's "Cymbal Rush," both tracks that provide challenging low frequency content in different sub-ranges, were delivered cleanly.

Occasionally, there is some system noise that sneaks into playback, usually between tracks, but at times I heard it during a song?it's a subtle crackling, whirring that can't come close to overpowering the music, and can barely be heard when there is no music playing, but in the interest of being thorough, it's not something I hear with every Bluetooth headphone pair I test.

In passive mode, with the power off, you can still use the UE 9000 with the included cable. The overall output is slightly less intense, but it still includes powerful low frequency response with no distortion, even at top volumes.

Classical tracks, like John Adams' "The Chairman Dances," receive a nice bit of low end boost, adding some body and resonance to the lower register strings and deeper percussion hits, but things never get muddy or too bass-heavy. At times, however, the lower strings can sound slightly unnatural?more amplified than acoustic. Though it's not super-accurate, this isn't necessarily an unpleasant phenomenon, and the low-end is nicely balanced by an edgy high-mid presence that lends itself well to the higher register strings, highlighting the rhythmic bowing in this piece. The high frequencies are not ignored, either, though we've definitely encountered pairs that boost the highs more?the woodblock hits on this track are audible, but stand out less than they might on a brighter pair.

On Jay-Z and Kanye West's "No Church in the Wild," the kick drum loop is delivered with a healthy thump, but there's less emphasis on the treble-heavy attack of the kick than we're used to hearing on this track. Again, things don't ever sound muddy, but the low-end takes center stage over the highs. The high-mids are sufficiently tweaked, however, so that the vocals are delivered clearly over the rumble of the drum loop and bass synth hits.

If you're looking for a solid wireless Bluetooth stereo headphone pair, but $400 is more than you want to spend, the good news is you have a multitude of options?but they won't all be as powerful as the UE 9000. In the big-bass-for-less-money department, the aforementioned Beats by Dr. Dre Wireless has a more exaggerated sound signature and isn't as comfortable, but it costs significantly less. The Sennheiser MM 550-X costs $100 more than the UE 9000 and delivers excellent sound quality, but its ineffective noise cancellation and even higher price give us pause.

For far less, there are still plenty of quality Bluetooth headphone options, like the exercise-friendly Sennheiser MM 100 and the super-affordable Outdoor Technology DJ Slims. There are also solid in-ear wireless choices, like the Denon Globe Cruiser AH-W200. The Logitech UE 9000 is a powerful, comfortable, distortion-free wireless option, but even with its solid performance and wired versatility, the price feels a bit high. Despite this fact, the UE 9000 is unlikely to disappoint.

Better For Companies: Slow And Steady Or Fast And Furious?

2146929875_cfdd99417e_zThis year was a pretty amazing one in technology: Many startups were funded and acquired, and there were some real advancements made in the way that we communicate on a a daily basis. I'd definitely call 2012 a major win, but it's been interesting to watch how companies operate to reach their goals and hit moving targets. Sure, it's not new that companies have to completely shift directions when something they're doing is flat out not working or the space that they're in is oversaturated.

Anti-tax conservatives say no to tax-increase deal

BOSTON (AP) ? In the city where a protest over tax policy sparked a revolution, modern day tea party activists are cheering the recent Republican revolt in Washington that embarrassed House Speaker John Boehner and pushed the country closer to a "fiscal cliff" that forces tax increases and massive spending cuts on virtually every American.

"I want conservatives to stay strong," says Christine Morabito, president of the Greater Boston Tea Party. "Sometimes things have to get a lot worse before they get better."

Anti-tax conservatives from every corner of the nation echo her sentiment.

In more than a dozen interviews with The Associated Press, activists said they would rather fall off the cliff than agree to a compromise that includes tax increases for any Americans, no matter how high their income. They dismiss economists' warnings that the automatic tax increases and deep spending cuts set to take effect Jan. 1 could trigger a fresh recession, and they overlook the fact that most people would see their taxes increase if President Barack Obama and Boehner, R-Ohio, fail to reach a year-end agreement.

The strong opposition among tea party activists and Republican leaders from New Hampshire to Wyoming and South Carolina highlights divisions within the GOP as well as the challenge that Obama and Boehner face in trying to get a deal done.

On Capitol Hill, some Republicans worry about the practical and political implications should the GOP block a compromise designed to avoid tax increases for most Americans and cut the nation's deficit.

"It weakens the entire Republican Party, the Republican majority," Rep. Steven LaTourette, R-Ohio, said Thursday night shortly after rank-and-file Republicans rejected Boehner's "Plan B" ? a measure that would have prevented tax increases on all Americans but million-dollar earners.

"I mean it's the continuing dumbing down of the Republican Party and we are going to be seen more and more as a bunch of extremists that can't even get a majority of our own people to support policies that we're putting forward," LaTourette said. "If you're not a governing majority, you're not going to be a majority very long."

It's a concern that does not seem to resonate with conservatives such as tea party activist Frank Smith of Cheyenne, Wyo. He cheered Boehner's failure as a victory for anti-tax conservatives and a setback for Obama, just six weeks after the president won re-election on a promise to cut the deficit in part by raising taxes on incomes exceeding $250,000.

Smith said his "hat's off" to those Republicans in Congress who rejected their own leader's plan.

"Let's go over the cliff and see what's on the other side," the blacksmith said. "On the other side" are tax increases for most Americans, not just the top earners, though that point seemed lost on Smith, who added: "We have a day of reckoning coming, whether it's next week or next year. Sooner or later the chickens are coming home to roost. Let's let them roost next week."

It's not just tea party activists who want Republicans in Washington to stand firm.

In conservative states such as South Carolina and Louisiana, party leaders are encouraging members of their congressional delegations to oppose any deal that includes tax increases. Elected officials from those states have little political incentive to cooperate with the Democratic president, given that most of their constituents voted for Obama's Republican opponent, Mitt Romney.

"If it takes us going off a cliff to convince people we're in a mess, then so be it," South Carolina GOP Chairman Chad Connelly said. "We have a president who is a whiner. He has done nothing but blame President Bush. It's time to make President Obama own this economy."

In Louisiana, state GOP Chairman Roger Villere said that "people are frustrated with Speaker Boehner. They hear people run as conservatives, run against tax hikes. They want them to keep their word."

Jack Kimball, a former New Hampshire GOP chairman, said he was "elated" that conservatives thwarted Boehner. He called the looming deadline a political creation. "The Republicans really need to stand on their principles. They have to hold firm."

Conservative opposition to compromise with Obama does not reflect the view of most Americans, according to recent public opinion polls.

A CBS News survey conducted this month found that 81 percent of adults wanted Republicans in Congress to compromise in the current budget negotiations to get a deal done rather than "stick to their positions even if it means not coming to an agreement." The vast majority of Republicans and independent voters agreed.

Overall, 47 percent in the poll said they blamed Republicans in Congress more than Obama and Democrats for recent "difficulties in reaching agreements and passing legislation in Congress." About one-quarter placed more blame on the Democrats and 21 percent said both were responsible.

Although negotiations broke down last week, Obama still hopes to broker a larger debt-reduction deal that includes tax increases on high earners and Republican-favored cuts to entitlement programs such as Medicare and Social Security. If a compromise continues to prove elusive, lawmakers could pass a temporary extension that delays the cliff's most onerous provisions and gives Congress more time to work out a longer-term solution.

That's becoming the favored path by some Republicans leery of going over the cliff.

Mississippi Republican Chairman Joe Nosef shares his Southern colleagues' disdain for tax increases. But he stopped short of taking an absolute position.

"I really, really feel like the only way that Republicans can mess up badly is if they come away with nothing on spending or something that's the same old thing where they hope a Congress in 10 years will have the intestinal fortitude to do it," he said.

Matt Kibbe, president of the national organization and tea party ally, FreedomWorks, says that going over the cliff would be "a fiscal disaster." He says "the only rational thing to do" is approve a temporary extension that prevents widespread tax increases.

But his message doesn't seem to resonate with conservative activists in the states.

"If we have to endure the pain of the cliff then so be it," said Mark Anders, a Republican committeeman for Washington state's Lewis County. "While it may spell the end of the Republican Party ... at least we will force the government to cut and cut deep into actual spending."

Back where the Boston Tea Party protest took place in 1773, Morabito wonders whether Boehner will survive the internal political upheaval and says Republicans need to unite against Obama.

"It looked like from the very beginning they were just going to cave to what President Obama wanted," she said of the GOP. "I didn't want that to happen. Now I'm hopeful that they're standing up for taxpaying Americans."

Continuous Cross Channel Promotion is an elaborate definition for the simple strategy of using all of your online assets (website and social media profiles) to promote one another. The main idea behind Continuous Cross Channel Promotion is to be found everywhere by your prospects, clients and partners.

Social media marketing is important for businesses in general, but it?s especially important for small businesses that?wouldn?t?get their name out easily otherwise. Small businesses have to rely more on word-of-mouth, and there?s no way to communicate better than with social media! Marketing tactics for using social media vary between businesses, but there are a few social media marketing tactics specifically for small businesses.

Google: Of course, small business marketing tactics are different than large business marketing tactics. But where small businesses are concerned, Google can play a huge part in the social network marketing strategy.? Google?s social network is ?Google + Local?, or ?Google Plus Local?. Since Google is THE search engine to rank on, Google + Local is also the social network for your small business to use. Google has lots of options that will help to localize your business, something very important for most small business marketing tactics. Interweaving Google products ? such as Google +, Google SEO optimization, and especially Google Maps ? not only makes Google happy (resulting in a higher ranking), but it also makes you more likely to be respected on Google+ and become more popular on that social media.

For a FREE report on Google Plus Local and how to use it for your business visit www.businesslocalreview.com.

Facebook: If you?re not going to do any other social media, do Facebook. At the time of this article there were close to 1 BILLION (961, 324,960) people using Facebook.? Statistically this reveals that at least a portion of your target market is most likely using Facebook.? Every small business must have Facebook. It?s dominating all other social media. As the entire world moves online, Facebook is becoming more and more important. Even search engines are starting to rely on social media sites like Facebook to determine how high to rank sites! Social media marketing tactics cover Facebook the most thoroughly. For example, it?s important to allow ?likes? on all your website pages so that Facebook users can ?approve? your site. This will help with ranking. Create a Facebook account and be active. Be friendly and informative. Post high-quality content that will help potential clients out. Remember: quality, not content. Write for people not for SEO or search engines. Whatever you do, DON?T SPAM!? Spamming is ineffective in the long run, damages your reputation is simply not a quality social media marketing tactic.

Twitter: Probably the second most important social media site, Twitter will help you really connect with your clients. Facebook will help you to survive in a predominately social media marketing world, Twitter will help you dominate that world. Requiring both dedication and creativity, Twitter provides a unique experience for clients and small businesses alike. Small business marketing tactics with Twitter consist of creating an account, providing information (preferably with links to your site, or even just links to other informative articles), following your followers and re-tweeting tweets that are relevant to your product. As with Facebook, it?s important to engage your audience, to ask questions, to provide really interesting content. You want something that will be re-tweeted and enjoyed by your audience! Remember, it?s not enough that they know, like and trust you, they must remember you.

Knowing how to use social media can take quite a bit of experience and time. Although you can gain a good reputation through social media, to really get the full value of social media marketing you?ll want to turn to someone who has had much experience with internet marketing and will know how to best market your business.

Pinterest: Before you say that Pinterest won?t work for you or your business you might be surprised to learn that Pinterest is a great source for referral traffic and currently drives more referrals than LinkedIn, Google Plus Local and YouTube combined.? Pinterest uses images and videos with links to other online assets (perfect for Continuous Cross Channel Promotion). Dedicating a consistent amount of time daily or even weekly to liking, repining and commenting on Pinterest can turn into a great source of referral traffic with a fairly affluent group of women between 25 and 55! Because of the power of Pinterest, you might also consider placing a ?Pin It Button? on every page of your website or Blog to make it easy for people to share your content.

YouTube: In our opinion, video is a marketing strategy of its own that we won?t be able to fully explore here. ?A well executed video strategy however can be significant when you consider that through video your prospects, clients, and partners can hear your voice (tonal inflection) and see you face (face language) creating a 24/7/365 presentation of who you are and what your business is about.? You?d be well served to record a series of short videos (2-3 min avg) answering the most common questions you answer time and time again as well as an equivalent amount of questions answering questions that clearly define how you, your products and/or service are different.

Creating and executing a strong coordinated marketing plan can generate results with an ROI many times that of your investment.? You can learn how to implement these strategies yourself but we strongly suggest you consider the value of your time, money and patience.? The tools and strategies for marketing success are ever changing.? We spend lots of time and hundreds, even thousands of dollars each month staying sharp on what?s working, what?isn?t?and what?s coming.

1. KONY 2012

Invisible Children, a movement seeking to end the conflict in Uganda, created the film Kony 2012. They hoped it would accelerate the arrest of Lord?s Resistance Army (LRA) leader Joseph Kony, who has been kidnapping and abducting Uganda?s youth for nearly three decades. With more than 100 million views in six days, Kony 2012 became the most viral video in history. The movement, however, ended quite strangely. The video's creator, Jason Russell, was detained in the Pacific Beach neighborhood, with charges of public drunkenness and lewd behavior.

US budget negotiations setback drives stocks down

PARIS (AP) ? Another failed attempt find a compromise in U.S. budget negotiations sent world stock markets plummeting Friday, as investors feared the world's largest economy could teeter into recession if no deal is found.

Without an agreement, the U.S. economy will fall off the so-called "fiscal cliff" on Jan. 1 when Bush-era tax cuts expire and spending cuts kick in automatically. The measures were designed to have a negative effect on the U.S. economy, in the hopes that feared outcome would push lawmakers and President Barack Obama to find a deal.

"We've seen Europe's politicians repeatedly flirt lemming-like with cliff-diving in 2012, and now it's the turn of U.S. 'leaders,'" said Kit Juckes, an analyst with Societe Generale. "The nagging fear is always there, that someone, on one side of the Atlantic or the other, will forget to let rational thought take over at the last second."

Amid the uncertainty, European shares fell. France's CAC dropped 0.7 percent to 3,642, while the DAX in Germany dropped 0.9 percent at 7,605. The FTSE index of leading British shares retreated 0.9 percent to 5,908.

The euro also fell sharply, dropping 0.1 percent to $1.3220.

In Asia, Japan's Nikkei 225 index closed 1 percent lower at 9,940.06. Hong Kong's Hang Seng lost 0.7 percent to 22,506.29. South Korea's Kospi shed 1 percent at 1,980.42. Australia's S&P/ASX 200 fell 0.2 percent to 4,623.60. Mainland Chinese stocks were mixed.

U.S. stock futures tumbled after rank-and-file Republican lawmakers failed to support an alternative tax plan by House Speaker John Boehner late Thursday in Washington. That plan would have allowed tax rates to rise on households earning $1 million and up. Obama wants the level to be $400,000.

Dow Jones futures dropped 1.5 percent to 13,072, while Standard & Poor's futures fell 1.6 percent at 1,418.

The two leaders have significantly narrowed their differences toward a compromise, but the latest setback leaves little left to find a deal.

"The fiscal cliff is a real threat not just for U.S. growth next year but for the outlook for global growth," said Jane Foley, currency analyst with Rabobank.

When growth slows, energy demand does, too, and oil prices fell in anticipation.

Benchmark crude for February delivery fell $1.29 cents to $88.84 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

Federal judge blocks Missouri law to deny birth control coverage

(Reuters) - A federal judge on Friday blocked a new Missouri law that requires health insurers to offer plans that exclude contraception coverage if employers or individuals object to birth control on moral or religious grounds.

U.S. District Judge Audrey Fleissig granted a temporary restraining order preventing the enforcement of the law, writing that it appears to conflict with the new federal health care law.

Republican lawmakers in Missouri drafted the law in response to President Barack Obama's policy of requiring insurers to cover birth control for free as part of the new federal health care law, even if they work for a church or other employer that has a moral objection.

State lawmakers in September overrode a veto by Democratic Governor Jay Nixon to enact the law.

The Missouri Insurance Coalition, a nonprofit whose members include health insurers that do business in the state, asked the judge to block the state law, arguing that it conflicts with federal law and is therefore invalid.

Fleissig wrote that the coalition is likely to succeed on that claim "given what appears to be an irreconcilable conflict" between the federal and state laws.

At a hearing, the judge wrote, the Missouri Department of Insurance "could offer no response to how there would not be a direct conflict" between the federal and state laws if an insurer offered a health insurance plan "that acquiesced to an employer's decision not to offer contraceptive coverage."

She is expected to schedule a hearing on a preliminary injunction.

How Much Should You Be Paying in Payroll Service Fees?

How Much Should You Be Paying in Payroll Service FeesPayroll is the most commonly outsourced business function, and there are many good reasons why. For one thing, withholding and other IRS rules change frequently, and payroll services make it a point to stay on top of all the rules. If you?ve ever done payroll in-house and had to pay a fat penalty to the IRS for a withholding mistake, you know well the value of outsourcing this task to a trusted payroll provider.

Another reason businesses outsource payroll is cost efficiency. Doing payroll takes a significant investment of time, and many small businesses save money by outsourcing payroll, as opposed to doing it in-house. Furthermore, outsourcing frees up many valuable hours that can then be devoted to core business functions. A reputable payroll provider can be one of the best investments a small business can make.

How Much Should You Expect to Pay?

When you outsource payroll, you?re not only outsourcing the calculation of wages and printing of checks, but also possibly:

  • Distribution of checks
  • Direct deposit
  • Tax withholding
  • Reporting to the IRS
  • W-2 filing

Small businesses can find outsourced payroll packages for as little as $50 per month. Expect to pay anywhere from $0.80 to $2.00 per check per pay period for basic payroll services. If you also add payroll services like direct deposit, 401(k) handling and tax filing, you can expect to pay $4 to $9 per pay period. In 2010, the average cost to outsource payroll was around $3 per check. If you run a small to medium-sized business, expect to pay around $100 per employee per year to outsource payroll, including direct deposit and W-2 filing.

How Fees Are Structured

Costs for outsourcing payroll tend to favor economies of scale. In other words, the cost per check for a 10-employee business will be a bit higher than it would be for a 50-employee business. Generally, you will pay an account setup fee, and there may be a monthly flat fee for the service. You?ll pay a certain cost per check, which will depend on which services you avail yourself of, like direct deposit. You can get services ranging from basic calculation of wages and withholding plus check printing and distribution all the way up to administration of benefits like 401(k) contributions and employee insurance and flexible savings account contributions. Generally there is a per-check or a per-month fee for these additional services.

Ways to Save on Outsourced Payroll Costs

As with most services, you have to shop around to get the best price on the specific services you want. Check into the cost of payroll services from a half-dozen or so providers, and compare per-check costs, account setup costs, monthly fees, and services. You shouldn?t necessarily go with the lowest bid. You may think you?re getting a great deal, only to have hidden charges sprung upon you after you sign your contract. Always read your payroll service contract carefully before signing. In fact, it?s a good idea to get a business attorney to look it over for you and point out any potential problems.

Choose a payroll services provider that has been in business long enough to build a track record, and ask for references. Find out how many clients the provider has, and exactly which services they offer. Find out the exact procedure for calling in payroll, and find out what their disaster preparedness plans are. The chances of a natural disaster affecting your payroll provider are slim, but you need to know they?ll be ready in any event. Finally, ask a potential provider if they offer a free trial. Many do.

Conclusions

A 2011 report by PriceWaterhouseCoopers stated that ?organizations managing payroll?in-house using premise-based or hosted HR software solutions spend on average 18% more administering these functions than organizations that outsource these functions.? Today, over a quarter of a million businesses in the U.S. outsource payroll functions. By choosing a reputable payroll services provider, you can insulate your business against problems with the IRS, save time, save money, and show your employees you care enough to make sure payroll is done properly.

School Shootings: Symptoms of an American Disease - Psych Central

School Shootings: Symptoms of an American Disease?I hate you people for leaving me out of so many fun things.?

Those words were not written by Adam Lanza, but another school shooter, Eric Harris, whose life was also wrought with themes of alienation and social awkwardness. Eric Harris, a Columbine shooter, compiled journal entries that pulsate with narcissistic rage and reveal a tendency to rely upon the psychological strategy of splitting: separating the world into black or white, weak or strong, good or bad, me or them.

Splitting can be seen in certain personality disorders and might also be used by some to justify bullying someone, starting a militia or cult, deciding to home-school a child, maintaining a survivalist mentality or even getting a divorce. Extreme cases of splitting can even contribute to rationalizing suicide or murder.

Partitioning and compartmentalization are not just becoming more prominent patterns in our ever more paranoid collective psychology, or politics for that matter, but may actually be a consequence of increased fragmentation and isolation found in Westernized societies and family structures.

I remember the first time I saw the movie ?Kramer vs. Kramer? and thinking how crazy the idea of another naked lady other than my mom sleeping with my dad seemed. Aside from winning prestigious accolades, ?Kramer vs. Kramer? reflected a cultural shift in the ?70s, further normalizing baby boomer ideals of individuation and rejection of traditional values.

While we embrace the technological and capitalistic gains made by the baby boomer culture, I wonder if we are in denial of the insidious social ills that have resulted from unrelenting individualism that sometimes manifests in shared custody situations, decreased social connectedness, or even an unwillingness to relinquish the right to own a gun.

While ?Kramer vs. Kramer? was fictional, Roe v. Wade was very real. Some academicians have theorized that the drop in crime in the U.S. in the 1990s is related to the impact of legalizing abortion in 1973. In other words, fewer unwanted pregnancies beginning in 1973 might have something to do with a drop in crime approximately 18 to 20 years later.

Movies can act as a time capsule, reflecting societal attitudes or events for a particular point in time. The United States saw a sharp increase in divorce rates from the 1970?s to the 1980s. If ?Kramer vs. Kramer,? released in 1979, reflects a culture that was beginning to accept and normalize divorce, and subsequent fragmentation of family, is it just a coincidence that the U.S. saw a sharp increase in school shootings in the late 1980s and early 1990s? Is it also a coincidence that the early 1990s also saw an increase in disruptive behavioral disorders ? which include ADHD, oppositional defiant and conduct disorder?

In the essay, ?I am Adam Lanza?s mother,? Liza Long wrote about her perspective on living with a son with mental illness. She mentions ADHD, oppositional defiant disorder and intermittent explosive disorder and advocates for the need to address mental health issues. Even as a child psychiatrist who understands the great need to destigmatize and advocate for mental health, I have concerns with her projecting such extraordinary violence onto her own son and would caution anyone from taking any child psychiatry case at face value. Just because a patient is identified doesn?t mean the problem is an individual rather than a dysfunctional system.

As I read Liza?s descriptions of physically restraining, hospitalizing and receiving verbal abuse from her son, I couldn?t help but wonder where the boy?s father was in all of this. She doesn?t mention another parent helping her at any point and it reminds me of my experience during my child psychiatry fellowship.

When I began to compile a caseload of young boys with behavioral problems, I also began to make a connection between their acting out and a physically or emotionally absent father. By no means am I invalidating the challenges faced by single parents or suggesting that all children with behavioral problems are linked to family dysfunction, but I think we?re kidding ourselves if we keep pretending it?s not a significant factor.

Some might look to the increase in school attacks in China to point out that this problem transcends American society. I would argue that the school attack timeline in China parallels a time of tremendous economic growth that has similarly contributed to social fragmentation and isolation. The difference in China is that knives are most often used in the school attacks and most do not result in mass fatalities. It?s the guns that make our problem uniquely American.

No one will ever know what really was going on in the head of Adam Lanza, and each school shooting case is different in some way. Anger borne out of narcissistic wounds, however, seems to be a common psychological factor in United States school shootings and this dynamic is more likely to arise in an individual who has not developed healthy ego functioning.

A loving, secure and consistent family and social environment can be conducive to healthy ego development. I wonder if America?s biggest problem is our continued refusal to acknowledge the social impact of our increasing difficulty in providing this for our children.

Online video going mainstream, says Cisco study : Media-Saver

In 2012, watching online video became more than just a hobby for cutting-edge Internet enthusiasts, found a survey performed by the Cisco (Nasdaq: CSCO) Internet Business Solutions Group (IBSG) studying the ?trends and behaviors? of 1,152 video consumers in the United States.

Among the study's findings, ?70 percent of U.S. broadband users are watching professionally produced Internet video every week with an average viewing time of more than 100 minutes per week,? Chris Osika, senior director, U.S. Service Provider at IBSG, said in a blog.

Of course, that's the mainstream audience. The more cutting edge group of 18- to 24-year-olds came in at 94 percent.

?Overall, streaming video is ahead of downloading and about even with DVDs and Blu-ray discs,? Osika continued.

Broadcast television, still more easily accessible than online video, still rules the roost, but the report noted it's probably losing ground since about 48 percent of consumers increased their streaming of ?professionally produced video content? in the past two years. Average Internet viewing of professionally produced content, both streamed and downloaded, consumed 13.8 percent of viewing time, the study revealed.

Online video continues to provide the attraction of something for nothing, as free and ad supported sites such as TV network Web sites and Hulu brought in more than 40 percent of the viewers, while a for-fee play like Hulu Plus grabbed only 9 percent.

Possibly the most important trend of the study was the least surprising.

?More consumers have increased their consumption of Internet video on the tablet in the last two years than on any other video-capable device,? Osika wrote. ?Consumers who favor the integrated experience?merging television and the Internet via a set-top boxes?spend the most time watching Web video.?

Daily iPad App: Beastly ABCs is a delightful way to teach your child their alphabet

Young children may still sing the traditional alphabet song, but many now learn their ABCs using alternative methods. One of the more creative ways for kids to learn their ABCs is the new narrative learning app My Beastly ABCs from Duncan Studio.

My Beastly ABCs is an interactive and educational story about a young boy's magical day with beasts from all over the world. It starts off with the letter "A" and the Abominable snowman and ends with "Z" and a group of zombies. Each letter tells a different tale and introduces a new beast -- some beasts like the Will-o'-the-wisps are friendly, while others like the Vampire are a bit scary.

Each letter also has an interactive element that lets your child take part in the story. My favorite scene was the letter B which featured a green boogey monster hiding in a dark closet. Your child has control over a flashlight that lights up a small portion of the closet and they must find the boogey man with the light and scare him away. As soon as your child finds him, though, the boogey man disappears to another part of the closet and the hunt for him begins again.

My Beastly ABCs is a carefully constructed tale that is enjoyable for children and adults alike. The story is fun and whimsical, while the narration work of Jim Dale, who also did the Harry Potter audio books, is top notch. There's an attention to detail in the app that you often don't find in children's apps. This is reflected in the gentle glow used to the highlight interactive element in each scene. Rather than tapping randomly on items to see if they moved, my kids loved searching for the small item that was glowing on each page.

My Beastly ABCs is available from the iOS App Store for US$3.99. It is compatible with any iPad running iOS 4.3 or later.
